Convert RAW Files To DNG For Peace Of Mind When Archiving Photographs.
Consider why it is important to convert the RAW image files in the DNG file for archiving photos.
RAW image files are properties of the cameras manufacturer their file extensions are unique in itself and does not change more than other programs, which consist of. "RAF" Fuji. "ORF" Olympus. "NEF" for Nikon " . CRW "Canon, to name a few. Adobe has also developed an extension of RAW image file. "DNG", meaning digital negative in 2004, DNG Mansions was created to unify the different file formats Camera Raw.
Your RAW image is at its purest, but there is no guarantee that your RAW file will be recognized by the software available in the future. You can have the most current software to read your Olympus RAW images today but long-term archival of your RAW images do not pose some concerns. Maybe 25 years later when you want to access your archived photos of your family is looking for this particular image of "Aunt Jan" as a child, or another image that may have some historical significance that your images are not much available. It was a big concern for photographers at the beginning of the explosion of digital photography, and even why many still shooting film, despite the progress in quality digital photography.
DNG image file format is the answer to this concern.
DNG files also have the advantage of increased security to keep all information provided in the picture with RAW files, ie, keywords, copyright notices and descriptions. Of course, this will produce a much larger DNG file, but allows for occasions where you want to access the RAW image pure. You really have the best of both worlds.
So much to say about the advantages of RAW and DNG files in many new digital photographers to wonder why all the other formats may be needed. Below is a brief explanation of some of the image formats. This short list is not intended to be assembled, but only some of the most common presentations.
A JPEG image file format that supports 8-bit color, and produces smaller files with less information available. JPEG format is a compressed image and the images suffer degradation in conversion.TIFF Tagged-Image is a flexible format that supports 16-bit color or less. The flexibility of TIFF has unfortunately created their own problems with many variations, both image and lossless some viewers are unable to recognize the changes. TIFF is still supported by many printers of their ability to manage space device-specific color, such as CMYK.
GIF Graphics Interchange Format is limited to a color palette of 8 bit small. GIF files are very small making it ideal for Internet web pages and animations.
