The Sony HD camcorder, the Handycam HDR-FX1 is being marketed by the company as a "world first consumer HDV 1080i camcorder." But $ 3,700 is the price is stretching the consumer label soon.
However, there is no doubt that the industry sees HD video format, and consumer prices will fall next two years. Sony HD camcorder is just the beginning of what is certainly an avalanche of HD camcorders from electronics companies in the coming months.
So that means we can all look forward to shooting Hollywood-quality videos in the future? Not quite. While some Hollywood fetaures George Lucas Star Wars: Attack of the Clones "was shot in high definition video, this is not the same as high definition is shot and recorded by these camcorders.
If you look back on this quote from Sony will see the main label, 1080i. If you are familiar with HDTV, you will know that 1080 refers to 1080 lines of vertical resolution and "i" means that the video is interlaced. 1080i is one of the two HD formats most common, the other is 720p (720 progressive scan lines).
Hollywood movies shot in high definition in another format, 1080p. This is better quality than the other two, because it is mixed with a higher resolution with enhanced picture quality progressive scan.
There is another important difference. Hollywood HD is compressed while the video recorded by cameras such as Sony HD camcorder is compressed in MPEG-2. This compression inevitably reduces the quality of stored video tape of the DV camera. However, it is necessary, as the HDR-FX1 is connected to a computer via a FireWire cable and FireWire, if the range of 400 to 800, does not have the bandwidth to transfer uncompressed HD video. Even if it did, the file size would be unrealistic due to the large amoount of disk space required to store and process the energy needed to change.
Another flight to HD ointment is that there are currently very few applications have the ability to edit the material for the Sony HD camcorder. However, this seems to change, because Apple has already announced that the next version of its Final Cut Express and iMovie applications, because at the end of January may not edit your HD.
High definition video will eventually become a consumer format, when prices fall and editing software can work with. However, until a compression format is that you can squeeze the data into HD without reducing quality, there will be little benefit over current DV format camcorders.
